Intro and Expectations

Welcome to Engineering Technology!

Teacher: Mrs. Julia Porter

Greetings and welcome to my classes!

I have been a teacher for 11 years. I graduated from LaGrange High School with honors and received the Hatton Lovejoy Academic Scholarship. I earned my BFA from the University of Georgia and my MFA and teaching certificate from Georgia State University. I have my Gifted Endorsement and I am currently working on my Robotics Endorsement from Georgia Tech. I have been married for 25 years and have three children and a grandson.

What do I expect from you?

I expect all of my students to behave respectfully to everyone they come in contact with. I expect my students to clean up their own messes, store their own belongings and put forth their best efforts consistently. Each student will need scissors, paper, non-toxic markers, colored pencils, regular pencils and glue sticks. Each student is expected to keep their work current by doing all assignments. All students will need to have a Behavior Contract signed by his or her parent/guardian and filed with me before any lab work will allowed. Assignments may be downloaded from this website. It is up to the student to get makeup work from me or download it from my website.

What do I expect from your parents?

I expect parents to understand that I want your student to be as successful as possible. While students need time to mature, certain behavior is detrimental to other students and to the learning environment. I will contact you as soon as possible to discuss any issues that occur, but because of the number of students I have and the danger of the equipment we use, I cannot allow misbehavior to continue. If I do contact you, please take my concern seriously because the safety of your child and others may be involved.

There are times when I find that a student who has average performance in academic classes is gifted with technology. I will contact you if this appears to be the case. I would like to use a gifted contract with all advanced students to help challenge them.

Your student's progress:

Students’ grades will be posted on Infinite Campus in a timely manner. I will write a note on the grade in IC if there is a reason for a lower score than expected. I will write notes on any major assignment explaining how a grade was determined. Students need to read these notes and place these assignments in their folders. All major projects will be graded with a rubric which will be posted on my website.

How to contact me:

I can be contacted by the school website or by my school email (porterjk@troup.org). If there is an emergency, you can contact me by my personal cell phone number which I included with the contract that had to be signed by you.
